A brief summary of MANET features
MANET runs on any computer running the Macintosh Operating System (Mac-OS) - Apple PowerMacs preferred. To start MANET just double-click the MANET icon . After MANET started, it is quite happy of having 4M of application memory, you may load a dataset with the menu-item: . In the fileselection-box you then may choose an appropriate dataset. To produce any plot select a suitable number of variables in the variables window . In the Plots menu you now can choose any plot, depending how many variables you have selected.
Data Format
MANET supports the standard text matrix file, i.e. tab separated columns with a labels row at the top. The first lines of the Crash dataset look like this:
Country | make | Head IC | Chest decel | L Leg | R Leg | LHead | LChest | LLLeg | LRLeg | LWt | D/P | Protection | Doors | Year |
Acura | 599 | 35 | 791 | 262 | 2.777 | 1.544 | 2.898 | 2.418 | 3.371 | Driver | manual-belts | 2 | 87
Acura | 585 | 1545 | 1301 | 2.767 | 3.189 | 3.114 | 3.396 | Driver | Motorized-belts | 4 | 90
Acura | 435 | 50 | 926 | 708 | 2.638 | 1.699 | 2.967 | 2.850 | 3.516 | Driver | d-airbag | 4 | 88
Europe | Audi | 600 | 49 | 168 | 1871 | 2.778 | 1.690 | 2.225 | 3.272 | 3.446 | Driver | manual-belts | 4 | 89 |

Europe | BMW | 1036 | 56 | 865 | 3.015 | 1.748 | 2.937 | 3.457 | Driver | d-airbag | 2 | 90
US | Buick | 815 | 47 | 1340 | 315 | 2.911 | 1.672 | 3.127 | 2.498 | 3.476 | Driver | passive-belts | 4 | 91 |
Columns can be a mixture of text and numbers! The value for a missing value is the bullet , and no strange magic number. MANET also supports polygon-data for drawing maps. For this the datamatrix must have a variable, where the label start with '/P', followed by the name - in the below example the variable name is ID, resulting in the name '/PID'.
/PID | Name of county | State | Area of county | Total population | Population density | Total white pop. | Total black pop. |
... | |||||||
3036 | ST CROIX | WI | 0.044 | 50251 | ...
3037 | SAUK | WI | 0.05 | 46975 | 939.5 | 46459 | ... |
3038 | SAWYER | WI | 0.079 | 14181 | 179.5 | 11962 | 18 |
3039 | SHAWANO | WI | 0.054 | 37157 | 688.0 | 35251 | ... |
... |
The datamatrix must be followed by a blank line, and by the polygons, for each entry in the matrix at least one. Each entry in the '/P' column must match a corresponding set of x/y coordinates of the polygon. The headder of a polygon consists of the '/P' entry (here 3038) a TAB the '/Pvarname' (here '/PID') and the number of edges in the polygon (here 9). Then the list of all x/y coordinates/edges follow. Note: The polygon must be closed!

Selecting and highlighting data is the key feature of MANET. Thus MANET offers different tools and modes for the selection of data, gathered in the selection-toolbox.
Drag Box: Click and drag a rectangle, in which all points are selected. |
Brush: Click and move the brush. All points covered by the brush will be highlighted transiently. Command-click to resize the brush. |
|
Standard Mode: New selection discards old ones. |
INTERSECTION Mode: Cases are only selected, if they have been selected before. |
|
UNION Mode: New selections are added to previously selected. |
XOR Mode: The status of the cases newrly selected is inverted. |
